The OD Green Kydex sheath with a Kydex belt loop will make the TOPS Filet feel equally at home in the field and the kitchen.įirst shown at the 2020 SHOT Show New Products Showcase, The Bestia was very well received, for obvious reasons. The handle is a combination of rubber and G10 that provides a secure grip, which is important when dealing with slippery objects. The sweeping 154cm blade on the TOPS Filet will make short work of fileting fish and will leave very little waste cleanly trimming meat from bone with precision. It is multipurpose in nature and can be used to bone or filet. Now TOPS is ready to release their first filet knife.įinding a middle ground between the flexibility of a filet knife and the rigidity of boning knife, the TOPS Filet is reminiscent of a Japanese gokujo(which means “all-in-one”). Hunting knives, EDC, and even kitchen cutlery. In recent years however, the lineup of models available through TOPS has opened to a very wide variety of cutlery. TOPS is well-known for making hard-use tactical and survival knives. The Hornero is a simple, yet very effective EDC design that you’ll be glad you picked up. He has had a passion for knives from many years, which has developed into him modding and he has even started making them in his spare time. He has an extensive background with wilderness and survival activities as a student and teacher. The Hornero was designed by Tomás Reynoso from Argentina, and we named the knife after the national bird of his country. The included black Kydex sheath has a Kydex belt loop that puts the knife comfortably on a bet up to 2” wide, making this knife easy to carry all day, every day. The sheep’s foot-esque blade is made from 3/16” 1095 with TOPS famous differential heat treat and black powder coat finish. The handle is large for a 3” blade, but it fills the hand nicely with its contoured mix of tan and black canvas Micarta. While that’s great when it comes to overall size and carry-ability of a knife, sometimes, having a smaller blade with a larger handle is to one’s advantage, especially if you’re going to be using it for a while. Usually though, smaller blades also come with smaller handles. Most cutting tasks out there can be performed with blades 3.5” or shorter. Sheath Material: Kydex with Leather Dangler It has TOPS' famous differential heat treated 1095 carbon steel, some classy burlap Micarta handles with a large pinky ring for gloved hands, and a solid Kydex sheath with a leather dangler. The ergonomics are fantastic and the heavy blade does much of the work for you during chopping but is also nimble enough for slicing. Whatever you decide to use it for, you'll look good doing it. Put them together the right way, and you end up with an interesting tool. Due to the thinner blade, it gives you better precision and greater range from making delicate cuts to cutting thick branches with ease. The jimping on the spine and along the finger guard is ideal for a solid grip in hard use or slippery conditions. Their professional heat treat gives a long-lasting edge that is easy to re-sharpen once it is eventually needed. That thickness along with a full flat grind gives it strength over 1/8" blades but allows it to maintain superb cutting capabilities since it's slightly thinner than 3/16". Unlike TOPS' other models in the 4 to 4.5-inch range, this one is 5/32" thick. Either way, it'll look great and get the job done. So nice, you'll want to wear it to your next black-tie affair or maybe just out into the woods. Like a prized, single-malt, aged scotch, or a top-shelf cigar, the Baja 4.5 Reserve Edition looks every bit as good as those classics and comes with a quality double-stitched brown leather sheath to complete the look. As TOPS has continued to be successful in that arena, many colors and finishes have been offered, but the tan and black color combo remains one of THE classic looks. ![]() When TOPS started building knives for bushcraft outside of the tactical knives with a survival flair, black traction coating and tan canvas Micarta handles were the option on most.
