Only having 2 free decodes - when 1 decode is the game which means you can only look at one move indepth - also makes it harder for me to figure out if I could use this for something. Maybe I am overly cynical and other people found really useful ways to use this, but I don't see it. Honestly don't even feel like this is a "but it is really useful for beginners!"-thing, using an engine to not only see what the best move was, but also why it was the best move isn't a hard to learn skill - as I said basically just clicking best move a couple of times in each position. DecodeChess is a next-generation chess analysis tool that explains the reasoning and concepts behind the suggested moves. As it is, this basically just puts into words what you could see by just clicking the best move 2 or 3 times in any given position. I am aware that having an engine look at a position as a human does is really hard, but that is what was promised. When my opponent didn't take this opportunity it also just says that "Re3 would be better because it threatens Rxc5", completely ignoring the more important concept of removing squares from my Bishop. I tested a game I played recently in which I blundered by allowing my opponent to continuously chase my Bishop around the board which would have essentially forced me to accept a draw or give up material to keep playing.īut instead of actually mentioning this somewhat deep idea it just says "Ba8 would have been better, it deflects Rook A from square e7 which allows Ne7" or something like that - when really the reason that Ba8 was better than Be4 (my move) wasn't because of what it was pressuring, but because of what threat my opponent doesn't have anymore. This really just lists all threats on a rather superficial level. I just tried it (after having heard about it a dozen times and never trying it before now) and I honestly agree with what seems to be the consensus: It really isn't that impressive considering what it promises and how I have seen it advertised. Overall, I would say it's far from useless, but it doesn't quite live up to its promise at this point. It basically presents a bunch of pointless information amidst some potentially useful information. Instead, it says Rb8 is good because it attacks the same pawn, with no other details, Rxa6 is identified as a threat, but not because of it's potential pressure on the c6 pawn and the defending rook isn't even mentioned under 'piece roles', but instead under concepts, considers it important that I know that the white rook guards c1 for some reason (third from top) or how if I push to a5, the rook defends that square and can take it (fourth from top). However, DecodeChess basically fails to pick up this concept. A pretty amateur mistake that's pretty easy to pick up on and explain. DecodeChess is the first chess software to auto-explain chess in intuitive language, combining the merits of a chess master and a chess engine (https://decod. Here, I made a mistake and played Rb2 attacking the pawn, but this doesn't work as, after Rxa6, my pawn on c6, previously defended by the rook, is also under attack and I just lost a pawn. I took this position from one of my games. Due to account imitations I cannot provide more feedback or examples.I find the app interesting, but underwhelming in some ways. Nor can it explain whether a move is really needed as it - for example - obstructs the development of a piece. You have to perform two "decodes" of two different positions and hope to find that detail which sets them apart. Nor can the system explain why a certain move is preferred over some other seemingly good move. So it will always resort to the basics only as it can't think deep enough to muster quality. Nor can I set the intensity (depth/time) of the analysis. It's inconvenient that a free account only allows 2 decodes per day, so I can't test it extensively, but this example doesn't bode well. Which is the consequence of a standard positional maneuver. The white bishop goes to d3 and then we end up like this: Last update 12:17:01 / Page cached 12:17:36 74min., Creator/Last Upload: ugandachess. The DECODE Annual Chess Championships 2022 - U18. The "analysis" thinks h3 is the right move and it's about winning a pawn:īut that's rubbish. is a powerful and dedicated server only for chess-results.
